Long-long ago in Norway there lived 3 brothers - Gunnar, Ulf and Torstein - sons of Till from the Coldfish fjord. People called them Tillson brothers.
The elder, Gunnar, knew all currents and flows in the sea and all reefs in narrow skerries and could navigate a ship at foggy nights guiding himself by the wash.
Ulf was a famous hunter. He topped everybody in shooting with bow and arrows and skied so fast he could catch a deer in the wood.
Torstein passed for an expert in fish habits, he was in hand both with nets and harpoons. Fishermen believed that fish obeyed Torstein, and nicknamed the younger Tillson brother "Herring Seaking".
Besides they had magical hands: either to tailor sails or to repair nets, they even could build a boat.
The Tillsons never parted each other: together they went fishing in the sea in one boat, together they went hunting in the wood and together they always went to the Thing.
And then one day the brothers set off for the Far Islands. They shipped out and took a ply to the north-west. There were they caught by the storm that threw their boat to the never known place in the blue water. The dense fog lay around on the sea following the storm.
And the brothers were left to steer by guess and by God. Lo and behold when water was about to run out, an auk-bird flew out of the fog and showed them the way to its home on a rocky island. On this island the sons of Till had to winter: their boat had been bruised by reefs.
They had their whack in food, but what missing was winter wear: they dreamt to return before frosts. However the brothers put the bold face on it - from buck skins of the Far Islands they cut jackets, employed a reserve sail, and substituted the lining by eiderdown. Also the Tillsons sewed hats and gloves. Now even the winter wind couldn't prevent them from repairing their boat.
And then as soon as winter blizzards eased off, the brothers pushed the boat onto the water. Ulf and Torsten leaned upon the oars, and Gunnar set the sail. And the boat boomed in full sail to the Tillsons' home. Fair wind was blowing and nothing barred their advance to the Coldfish fjord. The first to notice the boat was a boy whom old Till sent every day to the seashore, and the whole farm came out to greet them.
What a flush of happiness! Dozens of times Gunnar, Ulf and Torstein went to the sea after that and for a long time the warm jackets from the Bird's island served to the sons of Till. The brothers were since then called "Windproof Tillsons".
